New rule could let Lions talk to GM candidates sooner By NICHOLAS J. COTSONIKA • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • October 14, 2008 The Lions’ search for a new general manager just got a little easier. Thanks to a proposal passed at an NFL meeting this morning, they now have the potential to interview and hire employees of playoff teams before their playoff run is over. Previously, the Lions could not even interview anyone under contract with an NFL team before his season ended. So if the Lions coveted a GM candidate that worked for a team headed to the Super Bowl, they would have had to wait until February to talk to him. Basically, after the regular season ends, the Lions can request permission to interview anyone who doesn’t have full control over personnel decisions with his team.
