Tempe reports its sales tax revenue falls: City blames weak retail sector for decline

Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Oct. 12--Tempe's sales tax revenue through the fiscal year's first quarter is down 8.1 percent compared with the same period last year, according to numbers released by the city on Friday. Bad as the news is, the revenue collected in September was actually an improvement over the preceding two months. In July and August, the year-todate declines were, respectively, 9.6 percent and 8.8 percent. But optimism was in short supply at City Hall. "I'm not seeing any silver lining in this," financial services manager Jerry Hart said. A concern of Hart's is what the near future will bring. Revenue reflects sales activity for the month before, meaning the tax collected in October will show how businesses fared during September's "craziness," as Hart called it, of failing investment houses and politicians...
