Man dies after shooting self, wife

Son: 'an act of love and mercy' When Charles Mason walked into his wife's hospital room Friday afternoon, he was making the ultimate sacrifice, his son said Saturday. Fifteen days before he shot and killed his wife before turning the gun on himself, 87-year-old Helen Mason endured a massive stroke, broke her leg and then suffered a heart attack as she lay on the ground of the couple's Berkeley home. "My parents were Romeo and Juliet," said Jim Mason, 57. "He couldn't stand to see her suffer." And so, he said, the 88-year-old Mason, a retired fire captain from Bloomfield and lieutenant colonel in the Army National Guard, decided to end it all.
