Storm cleanup begins; some still without power

By MEGAN HOLLAND and CRAIG MEDRED Anchorage Daily News Published: October 10th, 2008 02:15 PM Last Modified: October 10th, 2008 02:15 PM Winds that blew up to 100 mph snapped and toppled trees, tore shingles off buildings, scattered yard fixtures and left thousands of homes without power in Anchorage, Eagle River and the Valley this morning. Ten public schools in Anchorage used backup generators to start the school day, said School District spokeswoman Heidi Embley. MacGill Adams had just finished bolting together a $5,000 greenhouse for his wife at around 2 a.m. Then the wind came out of nowhere. He stood inside and tested it at 56 mph and it held. But by 4 a.m. the greenhouse was gone. "It went under at 88," he said. The wind later hit 98 mph at his house. The longtime resident said that was a record. Wind ripped the roof...
