By Nawaid Anjum Ramayana, arguab-ly India’s greatest narrative, has been an inspiration for many. It has spawned scores of literary works — from its adaptations, abridged interpretations to countless retellings — not just in India, but in the entire Southeast Asian region. While an Indian writer, Ashok Banker, has done a six-volume retelling of the great Indian story, the filmmakers in the subcontinent have not been less fascinated by Ramayana. From Ramanand Sagar’s eponymous TV serial to Mani Ratnam’s forthcoming film Ravan, a modern take on Ramayana featuring Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, the epic continues to hold its sway over popular imagination.
