CHICAGO – Derrick Rose’s performance certainly had its flaws but went about well as could be expected for an NBA debut. The same could not be said for the rest of the Bulls, who looked deficient defensively in Thursday night’s 110-102 loss to the Dallas Mavericks in the Bulls’ preseason opener. Defense was an alarming issue last season, and one rookie coach Vinny Del Negro pledged to correct. Del Negro has 2 1/2 more weeks to improve it before the regular-season opener after the Mavericks used their superior size and savvy to pick apart the Bulls at the United Center. “I wasn’t particularly pleased with some of our mental mistakes in the first half,” Del Negro said “But it’s the first preseason game.
