Asda supermarkets is launching a range of "fine wine" in an attempt to lure middle class shoppers that are tightening their belts but don't want to give up all their comforts. By Harry Wallop, Consumer Affairs Editor Chateauneuf du Pape, Sauternes and Valpolicella are just some of the names making an appearance on the shelves of Asda, more usually associated with £9 jeans, £3 chickens and buy-one-get-one-free offers on toiletries. The launch is designed to win over the thousands of shoppers that have started to desert Marks & Spencer and Waitrose in search of cheaper food. Asda has already seen a 12 per cent increase in shoppers from the AB socio-economic group – the middle classes – compared to a year ago.
