NAACP hopes for historic turnout By Kristin Collins, Staff Writer Comment on this story RALEIGH - NAACP leaders said today that they hope to bring historic numbers of voters to the polls this year. The Rev. William Barber, president of the N.C. chapter of the NAACP, urged black voters to "remember every time people have marched so that we might have the rights we have today." The group's newly elected national president, Ben Jealous, was at Barber's side as he announced a get-out-the-vote campaign called the Millions Voting March. The two spoke at the start of the group's state convention. Jealous said North Carolina can inspire the nation if voters flock to the polls when early voting begins Oct. 16.
