An estimated one quarter of teenage US girls are vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is a sexually transmitted virus occurring showing up as genital warts and herpes. The disease later causes cervical cancer and it should be prevented ahead to avoid later health complications. Currently Merck & Co's Gardasil is available as a safe and effective HPV vaccine, and GlaxoSmithKline Plc's Cervarix is expected to be approved in 2009. Common adverse side effects associated with the vaccine are fainting and injection pain, headache, nausea and fever. FDA and CDC ensure Gardasil's safety and recommend every single woman to get the vaccine.
