The Italian prime minister seems to have a knack for unleashing a sledgehammer on a problem that more likely needs a scalpel. In a meeting with President Bush, the Berlusconi - likely aware of the decisions to suspend trading in Iceland, Russia and Peru - asked-slash-suggested whether it wouldn’t be appropriate to shut down the global equity trading markets in order to buy time to rewrite some of the rules governing the ailing financial services sector.
