Riding on Obama's coat-tails

Malcolm Mackerras | October 11, 2008 ON January 20, 2009, Barack Hussein Obama will be inaugurated as president of the US, succeeding George Walker Bush. Obama will be the 43rd man to hold that office and the 44th president, Grover Cleveland being counted twice as he held two terms non-consecutively, 1885 to 1889 and 1893 to 1897. The inauguration will be the result of the landslide win for Obama in the electoral college vote on December 22 this year. That is the formality. The vote of the American people will be cast on Tuesday, November 4, coinciding with Melbourne Cup Day in Australia, except of course that voting will begin on Tuesday night here, because of the time difference.
