Zambia’s Leading Newspaper Threatened with Closure As Acting President Rupiah Banda in Zambia is preparing for elections (30 October) after the death of President Levy Mwanawasa (20 August), the independent press is feeling the repercussions of election time fervour. The Post, Zambia’s leading newspaper, with a daily circulation of 50,000, is facing a possible closure from the Information Minister Mike Mulongoti for defying a court injunction aimed to restrain the paper from publishing supposed libellous articles against Banda. “What set off the case was a series of articles and comments in the newspaper accusing the President of lying and also critical political commentary which the acting President alleges was too personalised and not substantiated by facts.
