Safety first can also mean last

It seems like Formula One teams use any method to win. They build factories costing hundreds of millions of dollars that house wind tunnels operated by top engineers to streamline cars worth millions that are driven by the finest drivers in the world. Recently, they have turned to a new factor: the safety car. To gain position or even win races, teams are banking more than ever before on the intervention of the safety car, which is used to neutralize a race during bad weather or accidents. At the Singapore Grand Prix on Sept. 28, a safety-car period not only knocked out the two leaders but also made a winner out of the driver who had started the race 14th, Fernando Alonso.
