Nigeria: Treating Malaria Indeed

Posted to the web 10 October 2008 Vanguard The 63rd session of the United Nations General Assembly discussed malaria, the acclaimed scourge in the tropics. World leaders and philanthropists pledged fresh sums of US$3billion against malaria. The United Nations itself set 2015 -- seven years hence - as the year to end deaths from malaria. Nigeria and DR Congo, which jointly account for at least 30 per cent of all malaria deaths, are to share one third of the new funding. The pledges are $1.6 billion from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; $1.1 billion from the World Bank; $168.7 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; $2 million from Ted Turner's United Nations Foundation; and $28 million from a coalition of businesses led by Marathon Oil Corporation.
