Oct. 10--Working 4 Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. announced his "Working 4 Utah" four-day workweek initiative at the end of June. The program began Aug. 4. All state government offices are open Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Essentially, all offices are closed Fridays. Huntsman's proposal was an effort to save on energy costs. Administrative Services Director Kim Hood says the state expects to be able to close about 1,000 buildings for an extra day a week under the plan, cutting energy use by about 20 percent and saving a projected $3 million a year when it's fully implemented. The initiative took by surprise many state employees, who tried to rearrange child care, higher education and schedules for second jobs. Huntsman's plan is to try the new schedule for one year.
