Would you like to hear how I observed my birthday this week? You would? Great. It’s terrific being 39. I’ve still got lots of time to plan activities during my retirement, those golden, or sunset, or best years, whatever, that await me when I set aside my labors and take up golf, or gardening, or flea market prowling, and spoiling the grandchildren rancid, whatever. Those leisure pursuits are already essentially taken care of. You see, I’ll have not only my Social Security benefits to spend as I please, but Medicare to see to my lumbago and trick knee and this or that dysfunction, whatever. And there will be my personal savings, my 401(k) and other investments, to blow on spring trips to Europe and long winters in the Caribbean second home that I will be able to buy.
