Two NID campaigns funded with outside help

Historic time for water board rouses interest Although they can’t vote for Michael Straight and Nick Wilcox in the upcoming election for two seats on the Nevada Irrigation District board, Nevada City residents are pouring thousands of dollars into their campaigns. In southern Nevada County, the division where Straight is running, resident Kim Sweeney wondered why. “I don’t think our votes should be influenced by people outside the district,” Sweeney said. “I want to know the reason they support him.” Other contributors come from outside the water district. Hilary Newsom of Dutch Flat, whose brother is Mayor Gavin Newsom of San Francisco, also has contributed to Straight’s campaign, according to campaign finance records.
