Michigan Secretary of State denies voters off rolls illegally

BY SUZETTE HACKNEY • FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER • October 10, 2008 The Michigan Secretary of State denies that tens of thousands of eligible voters have been illegally removed from rolls or blocked from registering for the Nov. 4 election. A New York Times report published Thursday said about 33,000 voters were inadvertently removed from the Michigan rolls in August, a violation of federal law. In addition, the report states that eligible voters also were removed from five other key swing states: Colorado, Indiana, Ohio, Nevada and North Carolina. The newspaper said it based its findings on reviews of state records and Social Security data. "That's not a sound number," said Kelly Chesney, spokeswoman for the Michigan Secretary of State.
