If the polls are right, Sen. Barack Obama will win the upcoming presidential election, leaving Sen. John McCain to look back and regret that he assumed the mask of a maverick politician rather than that of a Ronald Reagan conservative. While McCain has succeeded in drawing some independent support, his uneven strategies during the financial crisis and election stretch run -- including his inexplicable announcement suspending his campaign in Michigan -- could well be his political undoing. While occasionally invoking the Reagan name in public appearances and debates, McCain this week proposed an un-Reaganesque government program to free homeowners of the responsibility to repay mortgage principal at a cost of $300 billion to the people who are making their own mortgage payments.
