Aid Agencies Hit by Global Turmoil

By Shar Adams Epoch Times Oct 9, 2008 International aid agencies are feeling the effects of the global financial crisis, with many battling the fallout on a number of fronts. UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) António Guterres, warned that the financial crisis was increasing pressure on the agency’s capacity to provide humanitarian aid to the world’s needy. “While we are doing our very best to minimise costs, our budget does not allow us to meet the global needs of our beneficiaries,” he told his agency’s governing Executive Committee earlier this week. The UNHCR has already exceeded the 197 emergency deployments it made in 2007 and in the last 18 months has provided emergency response to over 40 countries.
