‘Shatranj Key Khilari’ to be screened tomorrow

Friday, October 10, 2008 by Aijaz Gul Islamabad Perhaps the greatest name in the Indian film industry for art and non-mainstream films is that of Satyajit Ray. His name is synonymous with black & white low-budget films about Bengal (both rural and urban). But he has also made something different, something that was not his forte. The Cineclub of the Indian High Commission is screening Ray’s film from 1977 ‘Shatranj Key Khilari’ (The Chess Players) on Saturday (October 11) at 5 p.m. Based on Munshi Premchand’s short story with screenplay by Satyajit Ray, Javaid Siddiqui and Shama Zaidi, the film includes superstars Sanjeev Kumar, Amjad Khan, Shabana Azmi and supported by Saeed Jaffrey, Farida Jalal, Victor Banerjee and British director-actor Richard Attenborough.
