Autism made her readjust dreams

WRITTEN BY AMY BERTRAND — PD LIFESTYLE EDITOR How did you first find out that Jack was autistic? Every doctor tells you that nothing is wrong. But at 13 months he still wasn't talking much. We had his hearing tested, and it was fine. At 16 months his speech hadn't increased whatsoever, so I took him to First Steps (a state program to help kids with autism). He was diagnosed with autism. I really did not suspect it. It blew my socks off. How does autism affect Jack? His receptive language (understanding of the spoken word) is significantly impaired ... without an intense language program this actually gets worse. Socially, Jack has significant delays. He is very immature for his age, unaware of the world around him and or people's perception. Kiddos with autism see things black or white. There is no gray area. (He has) fine...
