Janice Tibbetts , Canwest News Service Published: Thursday, October 09, 2008 OTTAWA - The Supreme Court of Canada refused Thursday to consider an appeal from former media baron Conrad Black in his bid to keep court documents secret that were related to a freezing of his assets. The court, by convention, gave no reason for declining the appeal application of the former Hollinger International Inc. chairman, who is serving a 6 1/2-year sentence in a Florida prison for fraud and obstruction of justice. The Supreme Court's decision amounts to a victory for press freedom because it means that a ruling in the Ontario Court of Appeal last March, which reinforced the principle of open courts, still stands.
