With just four weeks until the general election, John McCain’s campaign is spreading three myths that darken the waters of reason as Americans decide who to vote for. Myth #1: The troop surge in Iraq is responsible for the decrease in sectarian violence. When the surge was initiated in the early months of 2007, a tentative drop in violence did allow for some gains in the rebuilding of Iraqi security forces. However, what supporters of the surge ignore or blatantly disregard is the Mahdi Army’s extended cease-fire, which was declared last February by Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.
