Berie Auld: Days of being an Old Firm star have changed

Oct 9 2008 By Hugh Keevins CELTIC legend Bertie Auld wore his European Cup winner's medal round his neck and used to feel proud if a Rangers fan stopped him in Glasgow city centre and asked to see it. Now Auld admits if he was an Old Firm player today he wouldn't be caught in Glasgow for fear of what might happen to him. The man who launched his biography yesterday (A Bhoy Called Bertie, Black and White Publishing, s17.99) lived through an era that was supposed to be booze fuelled and violent by nature. It was still possible to take alcohol into football grounds anywhere and consume it on the terracing. Bottle-throwing was commonplace at Glasgow derbies and arrests at Old Firm matches frequently ran to three figures.
