Posted to the web 9 October 2008 Maputo The Southern African Network Against Trafficking in and Abuse of Minors (SANTAC) has urged the Mozambican government to step up actions to prevent and combat the trafficking in human beings. Speaking at a regional conference on the subject in Maputo on Wednesday, the executive director of SANTAC, Margarida Guitunga, said the government should strengthen border controls, and step up implementation of the law against trafficking in people that was recently passed by the Mozambican parliament, the Assembly of the Republic. Mozambique is a pioneer in the southern African region, in that it has actually adopted a specific law against trafficking. However, it is one thing to pass a law, and another to implement it.
