Mr. October formula gets a makeover

Some formulas can stand the test of time without ever having to be altered (think Coca-Cola, Kentucky Fried Chicken or Einstein's e=mc²), but most need to be continually tweaked and refined. Reggie Jackson and USA TODAY, using a formula developed by our staff, will endeavor to identify this year's most clutch postseason player in The Race for Mr. October. Fans can chart each player's progress after every game at USATODAY.com and look for Reggie's insights on performing in the clutch and which players he's watching this fall. Hitters accumulate points for every total base, run scored and RBI. If they make outs, points are subtracted.
