In households around the region, families are starting to tote up the bill of just how much the Washington Mutual meltdown is going to cost them. The sums will, for many families dependent upon WaMu paychecks or WaMu investments, or both, be daunting and depressing. Replacing the job or the nest egg isn't easy or pleasant even when times are good. As you might have heard, at the moment they're not. No one is sitting with a calculator to add up all those individual sums into one grand total for the region. Such a number might be impossible to tally, given not just the reach of the direct effects but all the ripples and echoes bouncing off corners of the regional economy. That such a number is hard to come by is just as well because that figure might be even more daunting and depressing than the hit to individuals and families....
