Updated: October 6, 2008, 7:45 PM ET opened space on their 40-man roster on Monday, when catcher Bard was limited to 57 games because of injuries. He sprained his left ankle when Albert Pujols slid into him at home plate on May 21, sidelining him until late July. He also was sidelined in August with a strained right triceps. Bard hit .202 with one homer and 16 RBIs. He played in parts of three seasons with San Diego. The 35-year-old Estes, who didn't pitch in the majors in 2007 while rehabbing from reconstructive elbow surgery, began the season at Triple-A Portland before his contract was purchased by the Padres on May 8.
