By North County Times Opinion staff | Monday, October 6, 2008 12:13 AM PDT The 'Grand Steinway' award A sweet rose sent skyward to Henry Ziegler Steinway, 93, the great-grandson of Heinrich Engelhard Steinway, the illiterate German immigrant who founded the world-famous Steinway & sons piano manufacturing company before the Civil War. He died Sept. 18. We offer the rose to Steinway for his time, dedication and philanthropic generosity to the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad, where he served as the founding president of its first board of directors. The Fourth Gallery in that museum is named after him. Steinway was showered with awards, including the Medal of Arts award presented to him by President Bush at the White House in November.
