Coach still digs his sport at 83

Dr. Volleyball, as he is affectionately called in Fitchburg, is still at it, coaching the sport he loves. He is 83-year-old Bob Murray the coach of the St. Bernard’s girls’ volleyball team. “I’m a dinosaur,” Murray said with a laugh during an interview last week after his team defeated Monty Tech at the Bernardian Activity Center. Under Murray’s direction this fall, the Bernardians have a winning record, capturing five matches and losing four, the latest on Friday to the talented Leominster Blue Devils, who are 9-1. From his boyhood days, decade after decade, Murray has enjoyed volleyball, watching the game evolve and grow. “I played volleyball as a kid in West Fitchburg at the playgrounds, and later I played in the Army,” he said. “It was a great sport to play in the Army because you didn’t need a lot of fancy equipment,”...
