By Martha Bellisle • August 21, 2008 Saying a Spanish Springs woman needed to take responsibility for hurting a dog with her car, a justice of the peace on Thursday ordered Chris McClenahan to serve five days in jail, perform 48 hours of community service, pay a $300 fine and reimburse the dog’s owner for the $1,199 vet bill. “I have no question that Ms. McClenahan has led an exemplary life, and is a good neighbor and mother,” said Sparks Justice of the Peace Kevin Higgins, who had found her guilty in July of the misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty. But “people make bad decisions in a split second or an angry moment,” he said. The statute states that animal cruelty is “unjustifiably injuring an animal or being negligent causing that animal to be injured,” and she “can not justify running over a dog,” he said.
