Armstrong misses podium by a centimetre

BEIJING — Shot-putter Dylan Armstrong just missed becoming Canada's first medalist at the Beijing Olympics. The native of Kamloops, B.C., finished fourth with a Canadian-record throw of 21.04 metres Friday night, as track and field began at the Summer Games. That improved on the mark of 20.92 he set last May, but it was a centimetre short of the toss by bronze medalist Andrei Mikhnevich of Belarus. Tomasz Majewski of Poland took gold at 21.51 with American Christian Cantwell claiming silver at 21.09. The 27-year-old Armstrong won gold at the Pan American Games last summer, was ninth at the 2007 world championships in Osaka, Japan, and came into Beijing ranked 11th in the world.
