Phelps leads force-four America (AFP)

by Dave James 14 minutes ago BEIJING (AFP) - Michael Phelps swam to within one victory of becoming the greatest Olympian of all time on Tuesday as America collected four more golds at the Beijing Games. The unstoppable 23-year-old swimmer eased to his third title of these Games in the 200 metres freestyle to join Olympic icons Paavo Nurmi, Carl Lewis, Mark Spitz and Larysa Latynina as a nine-time gold medal winner. Victory in the 200m butterfly on Wednesday will confirm him as the most successful Olympian in history and with still four more events to come, the Baltimore native is on the verge of setting a host of new records. Phelps's latest victory was one of three in the pool on Tuesday with Natalie Coughlin and Aaron Peirsol also claiming victories in the 100m backstrokes.
