Chaakara, a play that explores the values and lifestyle of a Malayalee fishing community, is being staged in Kuala Lumpur. THE Kairali Arts Club (KAC) in Kuala Lumpur is staging Chaakara for three nights starting tomorrow. Chaakara is a Malayalam stage play adapted from the critically-acclaimed novel Chemmeen by T.S. Pillai. J.D. Menon: ‘Falling in love out of caste was taboo and frowned upon. This question may still be relevant in today’s world.’ The controversial novel was awarded the President’s medal for Literature in India in 1957. Widely successful, it was translated into English, Russian, German, Italian and French as well as several Indian languages.
