Fund defends right to education for all Fiji's children

HAROLD KOI Friday, August 08, 2008 EVERY child has the right to education and Save the Children Fiji has announced a $1.5million project funded by the New Zealand government to help children especially in squatter areas. The Mobile Play Group Project aims to expand its assistance and provide education for unfortunate children residing in squatter areas in Suva, Labasa and the Western Division. Fund chief executive Chandra Shekhar launched the program yesterday. Mr Shekhar said the fund recruited 13 people who were trained especially for the project. He said the number of squatter settlements in and around the urban areas around the country had increased. A research in 2004 estimated that there were 173 squatter settlements in the country with a total of 13,275 households. They make up approximately 84,000 people. But while...
