David Ignatius has an interesting proposal for Bob Gates after he leaves his position as Secretary of Defense. Here, he suggests that Gates lead a commission cleaning up our security agencies. Gates may be SOD, but he realizes the need for more than a military approach to our international problems. Ignatius notes, “Amazingly for a defense secretary, Gates has been arguing against the “creeping militarization” of foreign policy. In a speech last month, he urged more funding for the State Department and other civilian agencies, saying they have been “chronically undermanned and underfunded for far too long.” How underfunded? ” As the report notes, there are more people serving in military bands than in the entire State Department.” Gates would first work on fixing our soft power structure.
