The Berlin Airlift was one of the great humanitarian and military successes of American history.On June 24, 1948, the Soviet Union intent on dominating Europe cut off access to West Berlin. Their intent was starving the German’s into submission to their rule. They had already occupied East Berlin and the blockade might insure all of Germany in their hands. The Allies were outnumbered since the war had ended 1945 and most officials considered the situation hopeless.
