ER partnership strains Gatineau mental hospital: union

A partnership that was supposed to relieve some of the pressure on an overflowing emergency ward in Gatineau, Que., has instead resulted in a nursing shortage at its partner institution, says the head of the staff union at the latter hospital. Jean Lacroix represents staff at the Pierre-Janet hospital, which specializes in psychiatric and mental health care and partnered with the Hull hospital's emergency room in May. The partnership was to help deal with the large number of mentally ill patients crowding the Hull hospital emergency room, which is often overflowing with stretchers and has some of the longest wait times in Quebec. According to Dr. Alain Tanguay, emergency room co-ordinator for the Hull and Gatineau hospitals, most patients who spend a long time in emergency rooms are mental health patients.
