Ziggy Switkowski | August 07, 2008 ACCORDING to the federal Government's green paper, electricity and gas consumption in the average Australian home produces about 8 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per household per year. It's hard to grasp what these figures mean, so let's relate them to more familiar processes such as managing household waste. The non-recyclable rubbish that ends up in landfill locations around our communities amounts to a little more than 1 tonne per household per year. And yes, 1tonne of solid rubbish is the same mass-wise as 1 tonne of greenhouse gas. For example, each car delivers 4.5tonnes of byproducts and pollutants into the great rubbish tip in the sky each year.
