Juniors earn trip to national event

Staff Reports • August 5, 2008 ZANESVILLE - Cleveland captured the right to the AAABA National Tournament with a 9-6 victory over Columbus in the title game of the Tom Checkush Regional tournament Monday at Gant Municipal Stadium. Cleveland and the host Junior Pioneers advance to the national tournament in Johnstown, Pa. After scoring five runs in the first two innings, Cleveland watched Columbus put up a six-spot in the bottom of the second, highlighted by Casey McDaniel's two-run single. Cleveland responded with a run in the seventh and three runs in the eighth. Greg Turk allowed three hits and one run in 71¼3 relief innings to earn the win. Scot Foster had a double, three singles and a RBI, while Stu Murphy, Tim Krofcheck and Kurt Thomas all had two hits. Jordan Smith suffered the loss as he allowed nine runs - five earned...
