Poised to become South Africa 's next president, ruling ANC Party leader Jacob Zuma has appeared in court charged with corruption, fraud, racketeering and money laundering. Mr Zuma says he is the victim of a political conspiracy and is trying to have the state's case against him thrown out, but his critics say he is simply trying to delay the court case until after being elected as president next year. Despite the serious nature of the charges, Mr Zuma remains an enormously popular figure and was surrounded by hundreds of supporters as he attended court. "I think he's got all the skills, he's got all the capacity, he's got all the strength to become the president of the country," one supporter said.
