But, no matter how the rest of the season plays out, they must figure out second base and center field before opening day 2009 if they want to be a perennial contender. Manager Ned Yost recently called Rickie Weeks a “late bloomer.” But how long can you wait for that bloom, especially if you’re going to commit to him as the leadoff hitter? Chicago’s Alfonso Soriano is not the greatest on-base guy (.343) in the majors, but you have to admit that each time he comes to the plate, he scares you. When has anyone said that of Weeks? And, despite the tremendous strides he has made defensively, Weeks will always be a liability in the field. Had he turned a key double play in the series opener...
