Staff Reports The Palestine Herald The major maternity season for bats in the US and Canada is from April through August. The bat maternity season is significant for two reasons: Young bats may not be too adept at flying, and may end up on the ground in their early efforts to fly. In all probability they are not ill, they just haven’t perfected their flight skills. Sometimes the mother bat actually carries her young as she flies. The extra weight she is carrying may occasionally make her have a crash landing and rest awhile. If a bat comes in contact with a person, either by flying into, or being picked up by the person, they should try to capture the bat without further skin contact so it can be tested for rabies.
