While their friends are probably snoozing, they join about 20 silent, drowsy-looking teens sitting in a lecture hall taking tests. But that's life in summer school - well, not really. This isn't traditional summer school because their home computers are actually their classroom. They only have to show up for test days. So it leaves the rest of their week free for long weekends at the beach or spending the night at a friend's house. Colleges have been offering online courses for awhile, and now public secondary schools are beginning to join the trend, said Wanda Richie, Hempfield's summer school director.
