Plantation Village salutes sugar's ethnic heritage

By KELLI MIURA Advertiser Staff Writer WAIPAHU — A memorial commemorating the 100th anniversary of Filipino immigration to Hawai'i was unveiled today at Hawaii's Plantation Village. Eight flags were raised simultaneously to represent the various ethnic groups that came to work in the sugar plantations in the mid-1800s and early 1900s. Represented by the flags were China, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Japan, Okinawa, Korea and the Philippines and Hawai'i. The American flag was also raised.
