Omrix gets European recommendation for Evicel

NEW YORK - Omrix Biopharmaceuticals Inc. said Friday that a European committee is recommending its sealant Evicel be approved for sale in the 27 countries of the European Union. Evicel is a sealant used to control bleeding during surgery. On Friday, Omrix said the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use gave a positive opinion on the product, recommending the European Commission approve it for sale. The committee, called CHMP, said Evicel should be approved when other bleeding-control techniques fail and as a suture support in vascular surgery. Omrix expects Evicel to be approved by the end of the third quarter, and has already been approved in the U.S. The product is marketed by a unit of Johnson & Johnson.
