£2 million worth of vaccine 'wasted' , Department of Health admits

More than £2 million worth of vaccines were wasted last year because they were allowed to go off, official figures show. By Kate Devlin, Medical Correspondent Almost 500,000 doses of various jabs expired before they could be used, the Department of Health has admitted. The vaccines including almost 250,000 Bacille Calmette Guerin (BCG) jabs, to inoculate against tuberculosis and 124,000 MMR vaccines. Some MMR vaccines were also sent out with Portuguese instructions, officials admitted. The Department of Health said that the problems were created in part in changes to the vaccination programme, which in 2005 saw a policy change against giving every schoolchild a BCG injection and instead focusing the vaccination on at risk young people.
