An April 28 fire on the island destroyed the post office, the site of the new general store and an apartment. The donated 1975 fire truck arrives on Matinicus. (Photo by Cynthia Young) The fire underscored how ill-equipped the all-volunteer island fire department was to handle a serious fire. “We basically have no equipment," Matinicus Fire Chief Robert Young said at the time. Since then, Young said, the department has received a 1975 Pierce fire truck from Mt. Vernon, 2,000 feet of fire hose from Wayne and 11 sets of turn-out gear with 11 helmets from South Thomaston.
