During the wee hours of Sunday, May 4, of this year, a vast array of FBI personnel, including myself, received a hurried and somewhat disjointed telephone call advising that an explosive device of some sort had just detonated near the main entrance of the U.S. Courthouse in downtown San Diego. As the ensuing hours, days and weeks of investigation would reveal, this was a device of great magnitude, a series of large pipe bombs constructed to cause extensive human and material destruction. With late night Gaslamp revelers scattered throughout the downtown area, as a community, we were fortunate that the severity of the impact was primarily limited to the general courthouse area.
